Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate was built between 1788 and 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans on the orders of the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm II. It is the most important landmark in the city, and is also a national symbol that is associated with many important events in the history of Berlin, Germany, Europe and the world during the 20th century.

The site has to be assigned to the early classical style.

The Brandenburg Gate forms the conclusion of the street with Parisian Square "Unter den Linden". On the western side of the gate the "Platz des 18. März" is located. Here the "Straße des 17. Juni" starts which passes the Tiergarten.

The Brandenburg Gate marked the border between East and West Berlin and with that the border between the states of the Warsaw pact and the NATO. Up to the reunification of Germany it was symbol of the Cold War and became a symbol of the reunification of Germany and Europe after 1990.
