The spa rich in tradition with one of the most modern thermal brine bath in Germany arose on the north shore of the Scharmützelsee as an elegant country house settlement in the beginning of the 20th century. Because of extensive occurrences of the natural remedies brine and bog Bad Saarow was a popular spa attracting numerous artists and socialites already at the beginning of the 20th century. The Russian writer Maxim Gorki and the punching legend Max Schmeling were the most famous guests to 1945. Embedded in a health cure park of the famous landscape gardener Ludwig Lesser the historical buildings like the station building, the old mud-bath as well as numerous architecturally interesting villas form a unique ensemble with the new health cure and health care facilities.
